How to Play

Setting up a quiz night

Buzzr works in two modes:

  • In person: cast the display screen to a TV or projector, players join on their phones.
  • Online: share your screen in a video call to show the display screen, players join on their phones or laptops from anywhere.

The three screens

  • Host screen (/host): you control the game from here — only you should see this.
  • Display screen (/display/[code]): the big screen everyone watches — cast this to your TV or share it in a video call.
  • Player screen (/join/[code]): players open this on their own device to answer questions.

How scoring works

Players are ranked by speed — the fastest correct answer wins the most points per question:

  • 1st correct answer: 1000 points
  • 2nd correct answer: 800 points
  • 3rd correct answer: 600 points
  • 4th correct answer: 400 points
  • 5th or later: 200 points
  • Wrong answer: 0 points

Tiebreaker — if two players finish with the same total score:

  • Most 1000-point answers wins.
  • If still tied: whoever answered their last scoring question earliest wins.
  • If still tied: alphabetical order (but this is extremely unlikely).

As host you always see the full scores regardless of whether "show scores" is enabled — that setting only affects what players and the display screen can see.

Step by step: hosting a quiz

  1. Go to /host and click "Create New Room".
  2. Pick a quiz from the list.
  3. Set your room options (timer, late joiners, show scores).
  4. Share the room code or QR code with players — they go to /join and enter the code.
  5. Open the display screen URL on the device you're casting from (optional — see below).
  6. Click "Start Quiz" when everyone is ready.
  7. For each question: read it aloud (you can see the answer — players can't), then click "Push to Players".
  8. Players answer on their phones, you click "End Question" or wait for the timer.
  9. Advance through rounds until the quiz is finished.

Rejoining as host

If you accidentally close your browser: go to /host, click "Rejoin Existing Room", enter your room code and host password. You'll resume exactly where you left off.

Save your host password when you create the room.

The display screen (optional)

The display screen is a bonus feature — Buzzr works perfectly without it. It's most useful for in-person play where you want everyone in the room to see the action on a big screen, or for online play where you share your screen in a video call.

If you're playing casually (a small group, everyone on their own device), you can skip it entirely. Players see the question and their result on their own screen.

If you do use it, it's read-only and updates automatically. It shows:

  • The room code and QR code in the lobby so players can join.
  • Questions and options during the quiz.
  • Live answer count so the room can see how many people have answered.
  • Round scores and leaderboard between rounds.
  • Dramatic winner reveal at the end.

Tips for online play

  • Share the display screen tab in your video call (not your full screen — just the tab).
  • Players join on their phones or a second browser window.
  • Use the timer (set to 20–30 seconds) to keep the pace up.
  • The room code works for anyone in the world — no geographic limit.
